Top 5 best restaurants for breakfast in Jacksonville for 2011
Now that it's 2011, we want to update our top 5 lists with some fresh articles. Obviously, some of the restaurants from last year's lists will appear again because they've maintained their quality. However, there has been some movement in terms of ranking and new restaurants will be added. Whenever there's a new restaurant appearing on the list that was not there last time a " * " will designate that new restaurant. Also, if there was movement in the ranking from last year's article this will be indicated in parenthesis. This particular list will suggest five places for breakfast that we feel are the best in Jacksonville. The list will start with our number five choice and move chronologically to our number one favorite restaurant for breakfast in Jacksonville.
5. The Original Pancake House (down two spots)-The drop in this restaurant's spot on the 2011 list can be attributed to price. We feel the chain status of this restaurant makes prices higher for comparable or lesser quality food in comparison to local favorites like Metro Diner and Beach Hut Cafe. Basically, you can get the same thing down the street for a better price at a local restaurant. On a positive note, the food is quite good at The Original Pancake House and we still consider it one of the best in Jacksonville. We recommend you try the Georgia Pecan Belgian Waffle, which goes for $7.75.
4. Metro Diner (down two spot)-The prices are slightly better at here Diner than The Original Pancake House. For instance, Metro Diner's Belgian Waffle goes for $5.99. However, Metro Diner also dropped two spots from last year's article. Why you might ask? Well, Metro Diner is very popular and, as a result, the lines and wait times here have gotten a bit out of hand. Due to the small size of the restaurant we had to wait outside in an uncomfortable chair for nearly an hour. Given, it was on a Sunday, but hey, we're trying to differentiate between the best in Jacksonville and these are things to take into consideration. Metro Diner has excellent hot chocolate and the various egg benedicts noteworthy.
3. Orsay (*new to the list)-Since this is "Jacksonville Fine Dining Examiner" we thought it necessary to include an upscale breakfast experience on this list. Not only is Orsay a great place for dinner, the Avondale restaurant serves up a popular brunch on Sundays from 11am-4pm. Go here if you don't mind spending extra and enjoy French cuisine like Trois Foie Mousse ($9) or the indulgent Homard Et Truffes Noires omelette ($34).
2. Mimi's Cafe (up two spots)-We feel that you get a good more for your money at Mimi's Cafe in St. Johns Town Center. For example, if you order a Mardi Gras Omelette ($7.99) you get red skin potatoes, a large freshly baked muffin, and fresh squeezed juice. This omelette is large and full of fresh ingredients and we recommend it during a visit to Mimi's. Lastly, Mimi's is a large restaurant and typically doesn't require a wait to sit down.
1. Beach Street Cafe (no change)-If you're looking for a local favorite, this is the place. Beach Street Cafe retains it's spot as our number one breakfast restaurant in Jacksonville. There's a reason why this restaurant has a line out the door on many days. The food is good and the prices are very reasonable. Don't be alarmed by the line to get seated, it typically moves fast.
