I finally grew onions from seeds this year, rather than relying on the easier option of planting gonion sets, which is what I have done for years. I was prepared for a lower yield, but was surprised by the size of a lot of the onions that grew, even in the large variety trial, though I am still not sure why the plants in two of the gardens bolted.
