Squirrel Olympics – The Leaptathlon is my latest backyard squirrel obstacle course. With 7 sporting events, 4 separate courses, 2 squirrels and 1 pun-filled commentary, this is my biggest project yet and took three months to build and encourage my furry friends to ‘perform’ on camera. All the Olympic sport-themed obstacles hang off a washing line in my garden and the wild grey squirrels clamber, jump, and scamper their way over each one in their determination to reach the finish line and a tasty treat in the form of peanuts. There are four water-filled tanks to overcome in the ‘swimming’ event, squirrel-sized hurdles that really do fall over, a diving board for them to leap off, and gymnastic events that include a pommel horse that looks like a real horse and a rotating balance beam. All of which make for some quite spectacular squirrel antics as these cute creatures show off their amazing agility, balance and strength. I hope you enjoy this challenge too.
