Dedicated to the memory of Robin Evans, 'The Politics of Space' conference was organized by Mark Cousins.
Paul Hirst rejects an analysis of Western cities which focuses on the loss of traditional urban spaces through a conception of space founded upon, and thereby confined to, the classical city. He argues that any critique must address the prevailing political conditions because rebuilding the classical city or restoring the democratic polis, which would require an essentially homogenised citizenry and the continued existence of the nation-state, is no longer a valid proposition. Hirst proposes a new political model.
