Pythagoras was an ancient Greek philosopher and mathematician who lived around 570-495 BCE. He is best known for the Pythagorean theorem, a fundamental principle in geometry that bears his name. The Pythagorean theorem states that in a right-angled triangle, the square of the length of the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle) is equal to the sum of the squares of the lengths of the other two sides. This theorem is often written as:

a² + b² = c²

Where "a" and "b" are the lengths of the two shorter sides (the legs) of the right triangle, and "c" is the length of the hypotenuse.

In addition to his contributions to mathematics, Pythagoras is also known for founding the Pythagorean school, a religious and philosophical movement that explored the mystical and spiritual significance of numbers and mathematical relationships. Pythagoras and his followers believed that numbers held the key to understanding the fundamental nature of the universe.

While Pythagoras himself is credited with many mathematical and philosophical ideas, it is often challenging to separate historical fact from legend when discussing his life and contributions. Nevertheless, his work, particularly the Pythagorean theorem, has had a profound and lasting influence on mathematics and science.
