Here's a look at the drive that takes you to the highest point in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The drive begins along US 441, at Newfound Gap, the border between North Carolina and Tennessee. From the gap, we follow the road up to Clingmans Dome -- the highest point in Tennessee, at an elevation of 6,643 feet. From there, several great hiking trails begin, or you can just walk up to the observation tower at the top of the mountain -- which is also in two states, Tennessee and North Carolina. The drive then returns you to Newfound Gap and US 441.
I made this trip in September 2020.
