The remainder of the '500' British troops due to leave Afghanistan by the end of this year have now left theatre.
Soldiers from the 1st Battalion Scots Guards were among them, after handing over security in their area of Helmand Province to Afghan Forces.
They will return to their barracks in Edinburgh later today to be reunited with their families just in time for Christmas.
The early return is part of the planned troop reduction in the country, which will reduce the number of service personnel in Afghanistan from 9,500 to 9,000.
