Golf instructor Butch Harmon says the only time you should hit a 3-wood off the fairway is when you can reach the green.
Transcript
I see all the time people on the fairway take out a 3-wood
and they swing so hard 'cause they think they need
to get this maximum distance out of it.
The only time you should use a 3-wood
if you need the 3-wood to possibly get to the green.
Because when you see people play this is the swing I see.
They get the 3-wood,
(club hitting ball) they swing as hard as they can
and they get no solid hits.
I would recommend that you take a little more loft.
Like for me, I would take my 5-wood instead of the 3-wood.
By taking the 5-wood, or even a hybrid,
because you can see the loft on the club,
it gives you the confidence to swing smoother.
(club hitting ball)
You'll get a lot nicer shot and you'll stay in play more.
