Both Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Toronto Mayor John Tory addressed the recent news on Wednesday that some Ontarians have used fake cards claiming to grant medical exemptions in order to avoid wearing a mask in public spaces amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This isn’t the time to put fraudulent cards to get away and be able to go into the store,” Ford said at an afternoon briefing.
“As far as i'm concerned, it’s totally unacceptable.”
Tory also responded during a city update, saying that “there are no such cards that are required.” He added that he hopes “people would be wary of purchasing one,” and “be very careful about who they’re coming from.”
Toronto’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Eileen de Villa called the “fraudulent activity” disappointing, and provided advice for individuals who are exempted from wearing masks under the bylaw, saying to continue physical distancing when indoors, as well as wash their hands and stay home when they are sick.
