Wrinkles are a part of life and add character to a face. Through your lighting, you can choose to emphasize or smooth the appearance of wrinkles in a shot.

Want an aged and weathered look? It’s in the lighting! Want a glowing and youthful look? Your lighting choices will make all the difference.

Three primary considerations exist when achieving more flattering portraits of subjects with wrinkles.

Quality of Light—Your choice of modifier makes a big difference in the quality of light. Aim for larger, white, diffused light sources for less definition of the shadow edges. Try a 3ft octa, 5ft octa, or large umbrella with diffusion for more pleasing results.

Direction of Light—Try to create fewer shadows with your direction of light. When light is far off to the side or high up, this creates sculpting, which further defines and gives depth to wrinkles. When the light is centered on the camera, shadows are reduced.

Fill Light—Adding a light to fill in the shadows helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles. A strobe gives you more control over fill, yet a soft bounce like a V-flat is a great solution for a more natural, subtle fill.
