In this video we discuss post-acute withdrawal syndrome (PAWS), which is a set of persistent impairments that occur after acute withdrawal from alcohol, opiates, Benzodiazepines, antidepressants, and other substances.
Post-acute withdrawal syndrome is a cluster of ongoing withdrawal symptoms, which are largely psychological and mood-related, that continue after acute withdrawal symptoms. Just like with acute withdrawal symptoms, post-acute withdrawal can lead to relapse if the syndrome is not understood and if the symptoms are not managed.
In general, people recovering from drug or alcohol addiction may experience post-acute withdrawal symptoms such as irritability and hostility, depression, anxiety, mood swings, low energy and fatigue, sleep disruption including insomnia, inability to focus, lack of interest in sex, changes in skin condition, weight gain or loss, and/or unexplained physical pain.
Join my sister and me as we share our journey through addiction and recovery, from the perspective of the addict and of the family. We share the destruction and our reclamation, hoping to show how recovery IS possible. We hope to help those in recovery reclaim a purpose-focused life and to help loved ones heal individually and as a cohesive unit.
