In this tutorial let us learn How to Use Vlookup Function Matching with Partial Text In Excel
You might be aware on how to use the vlookup function.
Now, let us see how to get value from a table based on a partial match.
Here is my simple example with data of covid cases by some States in India.
With the State name in cell F5, let us fetch the value in H5
In cell H5, We type the formula as
=VLOOKUP(F5,B5:C14,2,0)
and get the result as 2137 which is the exact result from the table beside.
But, what if I type the State name as only “Andhra” which is the partial text of the original name. it throws error like this as #N/A.
To resolve this issue, we need to tweak the formula a bit to match the partial text.
Now modify the formula in cell H5 as add * as prefix and suffix to the cell reference of State name, like shown
=VLOOKUP("*"&F5&"*",B5:C14,2,0).
Now, you will get the same result which is 2137.
It’s awesome and very simple right.
I guess many of us did not use this feature till now, including me.
