First, the I-864 Affidavit of Support is filed with your marriage card application as a supporting document to show that the U.S. citizen spouse has sufficient income to support the foreign spouse.

In addition, I will discuss how many years of federal tax returns you need to show when filing the I-864 Affidavit of Support and some permissible reasons that you may not have filed a tax return.
