re-creation of a 1988 pluto-charon mutual eclipse event. these events center around earth's plutonian orbital plane crossing, which only happens twice every 249 years. the next plane crossing will be in 2110.
the right pane shows the view from charon. our sun, at a distance of 29.5 au, is only slightly more than an arcminute wide, while pluto covers nearly 8 degrees of charon's sky (16 of earth's moons in diameter). note: parallax is slightly offset to show the eclipse shadow.
