In June this year the world marks world refugee day themed around the “right to asylum” following the Ukraine Crisis. There are more than 80 million people around the world displaced by wars and persecution. Of this number close to 27 million are refugees. Africa hosts some of the highest numbers of refugees globally with Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, DRC Congo and Ethiopia being the top refugee-hosting countries in Africa.
Among the refugee population in Kenya, over half are children of school age 4 to 18 years. Only a fraction of them acquire places to study in public and private universities across Kenya and abroad each year. Not all refugees and asylum seeking learners are enrolled in pre-primary, primary, secondary schools and tertiary institutions located in Dadaab and Kakuma refugee camps. This means that only One-third of refugees have access to secondary education, and less than one-sixth have access to tertiary education, including technical, vocational education and training. Could education technology (EdTech) then be the answer that will bridge
the challenge of availing quality education to learners in displaced communities?
