A pilgrim's credential is a document that is used to track a pilgrim's progress on the Camino de Santiago. It is also required to obtain the Compostela certificate, which is awarded to pilgrims who have walked at least 100 kilometers of the Camino.
Credentials can be purchased at many locations along the Camino, including pilgrim's offices, albergues, churches, and monasteries. They can also be mailed to you in advance from your national pilgrims' association.
Pilgrims should get their credential stamped every day on their journey. Stamps can be found at albergues, churches, shops, cafes, and restaurants. Some pilgrims collect stamps in their credential as a souvenir of their walk.
If you are walking the entire Camino de Santiago from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Santiago de Compostela, you will likely fill two to three credentials. You can also stamp other items, such as your journal, map, or other parchment, to create a unique document of your journey.
