In this video, we’ll be covering the management of an acute gout attack.
We’ll discuss how long a gout attack could last, management of pain, and treatment of gout attack.
How long can an acute gout attack last for?
A gout flare up can range from a day to a few weeks depending on how bad of a flare up it is.
It also appears to matter if you have had many gout attacks in the past or if this is your first one. It seems as though gout attack durations get longer as you go through more and more of them.
This is why it is doubly important to try and treat your gout as early as possible and also ensure a healthy overall lifestyle to avoid any further flare ups.
During an acute gout attack, there is also a point of no return. Any little tinge you feel in your joints, you will want to try and treat the gout at that point before it becomes a full on flare. This could mean the difference of a flare up never fully flaring vs having gout for the next days or weeks.
The main goal of treatment for gout to is reduce inflammation and pain. You can also try to reduce your uric acid or at least not contribute to increasing your uric acid levels.
In terms of reducing inflammation and gout pain there are a few choices of treatment you can consider applying or taking.
Let’s go through a few options:
1. NSAIDs - Taking NSAID’s for gout is said to help with the inflammation and the pain. I personally find Alleve being the most effective for my gout flare ups.
2. Epsom Salt - Some people like to soak the affected joint in Epsom salt for relief. I find soaking an affected joint like my foot in warm Epsom salt helps to reduce the inflammation and temporarily the gout pain. I tend to do this a few times a day as relief is only temporary.
3. Applying Heat - Especially early on in the flare up, it is recommended to apply heat on your affected joint. It is said that uric acid crystals cannot crystalize in heat is applied which could potentially diffuse the flare up before it fully flares. Just to note, there are others who say they prefer using Ice therapy to lower the inflammation.
4. Drink a Lot of Water - This should be at the top of the list. Whatever other treatment you decide to do, drinking water should be the one essential thing to do during a gout flare up. Drinking water will help your body to flush out the uric acid.
5. Colchicine - If you’ve visited the doctor they may have suggested colchicine and although for some, medication may be a last option, I have used colchicine for my flare ups and it is quite effective. Many have experienced stomach issues when taking colchicine but that may mean they may need to reduce their dosage. But I have used this and I do firmly believe it did reduce my flare up from what I thought was going to be a few weeks, to a few days.
Once your gout flare up has started to subside, its still important to stay cognizant of your lifestyle and diet to ensure you don’t end up with another gout flare up sooner than later.
We’ll cover maintenance of gout in another video.
