Thomson's gazelle is a species of gazelle that is native to the grasslands and savannas of East Africa. They are known for their speed and agility, and are able to reach speeds of up to 50 miles per hour when running. They have a slender build, with a fawn-colored coat that has white underparts, and long, slender legs. They are relatively small animals, reaching a maximum height of around 2.5 feet at the shoulder. Thomson's gazelles are herbivores, and their diet primarily consists of grasses. They are also known for their unique mating behavior, in which the males engage in spectacular displays known as "pronking" to attract females.


Thomson's gazelles are social animals and typically live in herds of 10-100 individuals. Their populations are considered to be stable, however they are facing threats due to habitat loss due to human activities such as farming and urbanization. Additionally, they are also hunted for their meat, hides, and horns.

Thomson's gazelles are also known for their unique behavior of dashing away when threatened by predators like cheetahs, lions, and hyenas. They are able to make sudden and sharp turns at high speed, making it difficult for predators to catch them. This behavior, along with their high speed, has earned them the nickname "Tommies."

In terms of conservation efforts, some areas have been designated as protected areas for the species, and hunting is regulated in many regions. But more conservation action is needed to protect and conserve the population in the wild.
