For 150 years, the family-owned J.W. Westcott Co. has been making deliveries to and from ships passing through the Detroit River.
The company was founded in 1874 by Captain John Ward Westcott, who delivered correspondence to passing ships from his rowboat. Today, the company operates the JW Westcott II, which is home to the United States’ only floating zip code.
To make deliveries, the JW Westcott II pulls up alongside passing ships, often while they’re in motion. The ship will lower a bucket tied to a rope where the crew places mail, packages, and other deliveries.
