I don't care what anyone says: I think Little and Large are hilarious. Not in the way they intended to be, of course. No. Rather, I think they somehow transcend traditional humour and inhabit a much higher plain of comedy. I see their double-act as an almost cosmic joke. But anyway, here you'll see Syd and Eddie taking on Jonathan Morris and the late Gilly Coman out of Bread in the Christmas edition of Celebrity Double Dare, broadcast as part of Going Live on Boxing Day 1987. Peter Simon does his best to hold things together through the general knowledge quiz, physical challenges, custard pies, and final assault course - all for charity, naturally.
On a tangent, am I the only one who thinks it's amazing just how little footage there is of Little and Large out there? It's almost like they've been scrubbed from the record - their shows are never repeated, they're rarely mentioned in retrospectives, and I think I'm right in saying they've never had a home video release of any sort. In 100 years' time, there'll probably be more evidence of Robin Hood's existence than Little and Large's. Personally, I'd actually love to see recordings of their Saturday evening light entertainment sketch shows, if only for the nostalgia factor, but it seems like there's nothing outside of the BBC vaults apart from that one Christmas special that does the rounds from time to time. I mean, they pulled in millions of viewers every week for over a decade - surely there must be *something* out there...
Grateful acknowledgement to Oliver for the recording. Hope you don't mind me sharing this Little and Large material for the good of humanity!
P.S. I'd like to take this opportunity to extend an advance welcome to the good folks over at Cookd and Bombd. I'm counting the days until you guys discover this upload! ([EDIT]: Just over a month - not bad. Now to see if any of you actually read this far... [2nd EDIT] A further two months, but I knew you'd get there in the end - good spot, NurseNugent!) I think you're going to love the 30-second exchange from 10:08 - Supersonic Syd at his confused finest.
(Please remember that this is an off-air VHS recording, so don't go expecting 1080p HD quality. I'm fairly certain that this video isn't commercially available, and I've uploaded it for its historic interest only. That said, if you are a copyright holder and object, please don't hesitate to contact me.)
