Since the 1980s, it has developed into the world's largest greenhouse agricultural base covering an area of 26,000 hectares on a small coastal plain 30 kilometers southwest of Almeria, Spain. Hundreds of millions of tons of greenhouse vegetables and fruits are produced here every year, such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and pumpkins. More than half of Europe's fresh fruits and vegetables are supplied from this greenhouse base, which contributes $1.5 billion a year to the province of Almeria.
