In this video series, I demonstrate how to use Draconian Necromancer to beat a team of 5 allied Emperor-level (hardest difficulty) AI opponents with challenging map settings in Age of Wonders III (both expansions enabled: Golden Realms and Eternal Lords) by Turn 40. My specializations are Shadowborn Adept, Destruction Adept, and Destruction Master.
This is the introduction and setup episode to show what settings were enabled so you can replicate this. The rest of the videos in this series will typically cover 3 turns worth of gameplay per video.

My class: Necromancer
My race: Draconian
My specializations: Shadowborn Adept, Destruction Adept, Destruction Master
Here are the map settings I used:
o Random Map
o Difficulty: Emperor
o Map Size: Large (the larger the map, the stronger the AI can snowball)
o Map Type: Land (AI has an easier time navigating land maps; harder for single human player to defend against multiple AI when there are many more choke points)
o Surface and underground enabled
o 6 total players: human player (team 1) and 5 Emperor AI opponents (all on team 2)
o Starting Units: Weak (increases challenge for human player)
o Starting Distance: Far (allows AI more time to snowball before you can start to take them out and prevents human from rushing AI)
o Roaming units: Few (fewer roaming monsters helps AI)
o Cities: Many (allows the AI to capture many independent cities to help them snowball)
o Treasures + Treasure structures: Few (particularly harder for the human player)
o All Heroes have resurgence: Never
o Defender strengths: Normal (AI has hard time with Strong or Very Strong defenders and Normal helps them snowball to the maximum extent)
o Number of Heroes: reduced to 1 (severely increases challenge for 1 human to compete with 7 AI’s; setting this to 1 means you get your leader plus 1 additional hero)
o Max Hero Level: reduced to 15 (increases challenge for 1 human player with only 2 heroes capped at 15 versus 7 AI’s with a total of 14 heroes vs the human’s 2 heroes)
o Settlers/City Founding: toggled off (to prevent city settling, which humans are skilled at and AI are not good at, so we need to remove that human advantage to increase difficulty)
o All other settings set to default/normal
o Customize Leader including AI: helps ensure a balanced set of opponents who can punish Draconian Necromancer for its weaknesses and has strengths against Necromancer abilities. For this match, I chose the following race/class combos for the 5 AI. You’ll notice I did pick Necromancer for any of them since AI has trouble using Necromancer well. Several of the stock leaders associated with these race/class combinations have fire or holy specializations, which can do significant damage to a Necromancer.
1. Sorcerer Draconian
2. Theocrat High Elf
3. Rogue Tigran (underground)
4. Warlord Orc
5. Dreadnought Dwarf (underground)
