Music Theory - A complete Course from Grades 1-5
Lesson 14 - Ostinato
Ostinato is a topic which is covered at Grade 1 only in Trinity College Theory exams. It basically refers to a continually repeated musical phrase or rhythm. Take this example of Ravel’s Bolero. Arranged here for a string quartet. Notice the Cello line simply repeats the same three notes over and over again. Ostinato can also take the form of a rhythm. The Viola part in this example recycles the same rhythm over and over again every 2 bars. And it’s as simple as that.
