Johann David Wyss was a Swiss author of the early 19th century. Although he was best known for his classic work, The Swiss Family Robinson, he also wrote both religious and other popular works. Born in 1743 in Berne, Switzerland, Wyss grew up with seven siblings and was the son of a clergyman. He borrowed aspects of his own life when writing The Swiss Family Robinson, which emphasized the importance of Christian values and maintained self-reliance and resourcefulness among its core themes. The novel became extremely influential in children’s literature over subsequent years and has been translated into many languages and adapted for film and television multiple times. Wyss passed away in 1818 at the age of seventy-five having created one of the most beloved pieces of literature ever written.
