Bitdefender vs Norton vs Malwarebytes vs Avast - Independent Testing
🔎 I want to check the general consensus of all these antiviruses. Let's take a look at independent testing reports. There are currently two biggest companies that do this - AV-Test and AV-Comparatives. Let's start with the AV-Test, they judge 3 categories - protection, performance, and usability. Avast and Bitdefender scored perfectly in all 3 categories. Norton got a slightly lower mark in performance, and Malwarebytes was slightly lacking in protection.
🔎 AV-Comparatives looked at online and offline detection rates and false positives. And 2 of these antiviruses got the highest Advanced+ title. Norton had just an Advanced Award because it identified a few more false positives. Strangely there are no AV-Comparatives tests on Malwarebytes… After looking at all this data, it seems like all 4 antivirus providers are leading the market and will give you great protection… but let's run some tests on our own.
Avast vs Malwarebytes vs Bitdefender vs Norton — My Testing
🔎 I added 10 malware files and ran a full scan. Avast did the best in this regard, catching 9 out of 10 files. The scan itself was surprisingly light on my system, using only around 30-40% of CPU and taking around 10 minutes, so overall, impressive results. Norton and Bitdefender caught 8 out of 10 files. Malwarebytes was a bit of an exception because it only found 7 files while the scan took the longest, nearly half an hour. And it also used ALL of my CPU. Malwarebytes is very taxing on the system yet the detection rate is a bit lower. Both Norton and Bitdefender used around 60% CPU and were finished in less than 10 minutes. If we add everything up, it seems like all 4 competitors offer similar top-class security.
Malwarebytes vs Avast vs Bitdefender vs Norton — Ease of Use
🔎 If you look at Norton dashboard itself it is clean and simple. It's a polished and professional interface that’s maybe a bit TOO professional… Creating a learning curve, that might not be what you're looking for. I love how much I can adapt Norton to my needs, but to be fair, I have 2 small gripes. One, Norton keeps opening new windows for most of its tools, and your screen can become cluttered easily. Two, Norton’s interface makes quite poor use of screen real estate, with a lot of white space.
🔎 If Norton seems like a bit too much for you, Avast should be right up your alley. It has a user-friendly interface that alerts me about any threat to my device. Everything is a bit simplified compared to Norton's UI. In some places, it can feel a bit TOO simplified, but other than that, it works great.
🔎 Bitdefender probably has my favorite approach to controls. It offers light and black-colored flat user interfaces that match well with Windows and modern design trends. It’s nicely laid out, with a large banner showing protection status and smaller modules for specific security areas. It's not as minimalistic as Malwarebytes, but it has better navigation than Norton. I will say that there are a lot of features and it can be a bit daunting, but most tools and settings have useful explanations.
