Students and people in huge numbers gathered on the Marina Beach in Chennai to stage a protest against Centre's inaction towards not forming the Cauvery Water Management Board. A number of students were arrested and forced out of the venue. The Supreme Court in its February verdict had recommended the Centre to form the Board within six weeks to decide Cauvery water sharing between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. But as the deadline is over and still the Centre is not moving ahead with this as Karnataka is opposing the formation of the Board. BJP does not want to take any chances as Karnataka will go for elections in May. Thus the Centre has appealed to the Apex Court that the order be deferred for three months. But protests in Tamil Nadu demanding the formation of Cauvery Management Board is being intensified. Thus Tamil Nadu has also moved SC seeking to direct Centre to form the Board immediately. Section 144 is imposed in and around Marina Beach in Chennai.
