Elections influence the direction of communities and countries. They also present opportunities and challenges for women as they seek to participate.
With more than 70 elections taking place in 2015, there’s never been a better time to examine women’s roles in politics. The success stories from around the globe show the power of women’s participation, while, in far too many elections, we also see the barriers holding back women and the communities they know and represent.
Featured speakers included:
• Michelle Bekkering, International Republican Institute
• Naheed Farid, Member of Afghanistan Parliament
• Sayida Ounissi, Member of Tunisia Parliament
• Sandra Pepera, National Democratic Institute
• Debra Zimmerman, Women Make Movies
Women and Foreign Policy: Election Season was the second event in a series of meetings hosted by Ambassador Russell. The Women and Foreign Policy series looks at the relationship between gender inequality and foreign policy, with a focus on solutions and best practices.
