There are many many different German colonies throughout Latin America, some of which are quite old, others new, some small and some larger. The history of Germans in Latin America dates all the way back to the early 16th century when settlers from Central Germany attempted to create a colony in modern Venezuela with permission from the Spanish Empire. Although this colony failed in only a matter of decades due to the unfamiliar conditions and diseases the colonists had to deal with, many Germans would return to South America once more centuries later as immigrants to these independent nations. Countries like Brazil, Argentina and Chile have some of the largest ethnic German populations. In addition, many German-speaking Mennonites have migrated from the US & Canada to Latin American countries like Mexico, Bolivia and Paraguay, creating unique enclaves of German speakers throughout the Americas.
