Dashrath Manjhi, also known as the "Mountain Man" was a laborer from the Gehlour village in Bihar, India. His wife, Falguni Devi, died in 1959 because she couldn't receive timely medical treatment. The nearest doctor was in a town that was 55 kilometers away, and the journey required navigating around a massive mountain.
Grieving the loss of his wife and driven by the desire to prevent similar tragedies for others, Manjhi decided to carve a path through the mountain to reduce the travel distance between his village and the nearest town. With just a hammer and chisel, he started his work in 1960. It took him 22 years of relentless effort, working day and night, to complete the task. By the time he finished in 1982, he had reduced the distance to just 15 kilometers, making access to healthcare, education, and other services much easier for his village.
Dashrath Manjhi's incredible determination and selflessness have made him a folk hero in India. His life and work were celebrated in the 2015 biographical film "Manjhi – The Mountain Man," which brought wider recognition to his remarkable achievement.
