Before going down to Austin to perform at SXSW 2015 with my band JPNSGRLS, I purchased an Orange Micro Terror Guitar Amp Head hoping that it would allow me to bring a comparable sound to my Orange Rocker 30 combo without having to lug a 50lb amp with me on the plane or trying to find one down there (impossible).
I did a lot of research about the Micro Terror and there is plenty of examples out there that show it being plugged into an external cabinet but I was concerned to what I would do if I could not find a cab I could plug into... I couldn't find anything online about whether or not the Micro Terror would work using a DI (Direct In) into the mixing board...
So before leaving for SXSW, I went to my local guitar and amp shop and tested the Micro Terror Direct In to a mixing board and to my luck it worked! So I brought the Terror with me to SXSW as a real test run and it just blew me and the audience away. 3 of the shows I played I had to DI and only 1 show had an external cabinet.
In the video there are examples of both. The first show uses the DI method and the second show at the end uses an external cab. To be honest though, I almost prefer Direct In to an external cabinet because there is no bleed from an amp on stage. All the guitar sounds are coming out of the house Pa system and hence the mix can be very clean.
To DI with the Micro Terror you will need to have a 1/4 inch male to 1/4 stereo cable (basically a Y cable) and then plug the 1/4 inch male into the headphone output of the Terror and the two 1/4 stereo inputs into a DI box.
Final review: I love the Orange Micro Terror. It is the perfect touring amp. It is super light (2lbs), can fit into a backpack, can plug into an external cab or DI and absolutely destroys sound wise. I highly recommend picking one up. They are so cheap.
