From Nick:
Over the past two days, I learned that all my basic necessities were taken care of. The morning began with class and the mental preparation that would be needed to overcome the day's survival situations. This included coffee and water to maintain my mental alertness. Especially coffee. The team from SS also secured the idea for material preparation, suiting us up in flight jumpers, PFDs, harnesses for GWO, air tanks for HUET, the whole nine yards. That tenth yard was putting our knowledge from class into action, starting from a crawl, to walk, and finally running into the most climatic situation. It certainly felt real. At GWO, you felt as if the emergency was actually happening at night during a rain storm. Through HUET, being upside down underwater never more disorienting. Even as a scuba diver, I was still disoriented. But the pace of training, the repetition, and the progression to the final chapter only continued to build confidence with each step building on the next.
I certainly feel more prepared than ever for the real thing and would gladly recommend this course to be done annually by me and my company. Repetition is key and SS nailed it because even with all the simulations, the real thing will be far more dramatic. Even Mike Tyson quoted "everyone has a plan going into the ring, until they get hit in the face". SS has shown me I want to be as prepared as possible for the ring because they certainly made it feel real...
From Christian:
This summer I will be working offshore installing foundations for one of the first commercial-scale offshore wind farms in the US. Crew transfers to our offshore installation vessels will be done by helicopter, so for this reason I enrolled in Helicopter Underwater Egress Training (HUET). My motivation for taking the class was to be prepared to escape from a sinking helicopter in the event of a crash.
The day started with introductions and a PowerPoint presentation, which introduced the equipment and safety concepts. With a small class size of six, it was easy to ask questions and to get to know my classmates. The class participants came from a wide range of employers, from major energy developers to PPE providers. Our instructor created a relaxed environment, which provided the opportunity to learn from all the different perspectives in the room.
After lunch, it was time for the practical application of the concepts introduced in the morning (i.e. time to get dunked). Several of my classmates were industry veterans, who had done HUET training once or twice before. I, on the other hand, joined the class with no real offshore experience. I definitely felt some nervous energy as I strapped into the simulator, but the adrenaline really kicked in when if felt the water moving up my body as we descended. The escape procedure is fairly simple on paper with only a few steps, but once you are underwater it becomes very complicated very quickly. After mixing up the order of operations on the first attempt, I gained a real appreciation for why we simulate this experience before sending people offshore. I was dunked several more times, and by the end of the day, I really did feel prepared to escape from a sinking helicopter. The instructors and team of rescue divers were knowledgeable professionals with loads of experience, so I never truly felt unsafe despite being upside down and underwater with no air.
I left HUET training with an incredible sense of accomplishment. I think we all like to believe that we would be able to stay calm in an emergency situation, but you can never really know. After a week in Groton, CT doing my GWO-BST/SS & HUET, I strongly believe that the best way to prepare is to test yourself in a simulated environment. If you are working offshore and take your safety seriously, I highly recommend that you do your training at Survival Systems USA!
