Hey everyone! In today's video, I'm diving deep into my firsthand experience with the Colombian healthcare system as an expat. Living between Bogota, Colombia, and Lucerne, Switzerland, and hailing from the USA, I've had my fair share of healthcare encounters across the globe. But Colombia? It's been a game-changer, especially for someone with a genetic predisposition to high blood pressure.
I'm sharing the journey of managing my health condition abroad, from the challenges of finding specific medications to navigating a new healthcare system. With a combination of health insurance and social security retirement called EPS, healthcare in Colombia has been both affordable and accessible, costing me roughly $19 to $25 a month.
My adventure includes a visit to a doctor in Bogota, where a copay is just about a dollar, and the unique experience of the Colombian medical appointment system. Spoiler alert: it's way different from back home. Plus, I found a medication that's available both in Colombia and Switzerland, thanks to a doctor who prescribed me a new drug, showcasing the efficiency and modernity of the system here.
I also touch on the Colombian pharmacy experience and the striking differences in prescription culture compared to the US. And guess what? My EPS covered everything 100%, from the doctor's visit to the medication – a far cry from the US healthcare billing surprises.
I even had a physical check-up that was smooth, fast, and covered by EPS, complete with blood work results emailed to me in just a few hours. This experience has not only saved me money but has also opened my eyes to the effectiveness of Colombia's healthcare system, ranked highest in Latin America and above the US and Canada.
Join me as I share insights into living in Bogota, the incredible city life, and why I've fallen in love with Colombia.
