*How to #laylaminateflooring: a step-by-step DIY guide*
Installing new laminate flooring can feel like a daunting task if you have never done it before. We want to show you how straightforward it can be.
*1. Measure and saw laminate to length* – Before you start, you will need to take accurate measurements of the room, including any special corners or caveats for pipes, radiators, etc. Mark your measurements on the laminate strips and cut to length. We recommend using a table saw for accurate straight and angled cuts.
Tip: Installing laminate flooring perpendicular to the direction of a small room can make it appear larger. Just remember, laminate flooring is typically laid lengthwise to a room’s main light source.
*2. Prepare the subfloor* – Before you start thinking about how to fit your laminate flooring, you need to prepare the subfloor. First, level out any major bumps or cracks with filler. Then, put down a vapour barrier followed by soundproofing insulation.
Tip: Vapour strips need to overlap and be sealed with adhesive tape to be effective.
*3. Install the first row* – Start by placing a 10mm spacer between the wall and the first set of strips – this gives the wood space to expand. Once installed, ensure everything is straight to avoid tension in the joints.
*4. Install the other laminate strips* – Most laminate uses a click system, meaning you should install diagonally and gently press down. Connect long sides first and gently tap to ensure everything is secured.
*5. Fill any gaps* – Small gaps are likely at the corners of a room. Measure the gap and transfer to the laminate, then cut with a jigsaw. Click into place, remembering to leave 10mm between the laminate and the wall.
This may take a little patience if you have to account for pipes or other obstructions. Let us know in the comments if you have any tips and tricks of your own when it comes to laying laminate flooring.
