The talk: Mobilising research in the policy landscape
Breaking news every hour, a continuous onslaught of social media posts, videos, podcasts and an endless stream of messages, calls and opinions vying for attention. If that’s what life is like for most people, imagine being in government or parliament. Every day you are bombarded by more and more information competing to win the hearts and minds of those in power.
Tired of receiving descriptive briefings full of jargon, government officials, Members of Parliament and their advisors often end up resorting to “The twin pillars of Google and asking people we know”. So how do time-poor researchers cut through the noise to capture the attention of policy and decision makers?
The seminar will focus on engaging with the UK government and parliament and how to mobilise your research in the policy landscape, what influences policy and decision makers, and some tips and resources to help you on your journey to policy impact.
The end of the REF2021 cycle provides an opportunity to share and reflect on impact in the hope of developing more knowledgeable, proactive and collaborative strategies for the future of social research in our university.

Two FLAS-based lecturers, Dr Elena Vacchelli (Centre of Applied Sociology Research) and Dr Giulia Zampini (Gender, Deviance and Society Research Group) are working together to bring impact experts into dialogue with University of Greenwich staff.
In term 2 we aim to hold a series of webinars and Q&As on the subject of impact.
Rob Davies
Rob is CLOSER’s Knowledge Mobiliser. His role is to increase the visibility, use and impact of longitudinal population studies, data and research within government and parliament and feed evidence into policy and decision making. In May 2020, Rob took on an additional role as Head of the CLOSER COVID-19 Taskforce and is the architect of the COVID-19 Longitudinal Research Hub.
In February 2021, Rob was awarded a CAPE Policy Fellowship and is currently seconded (part-time) to the House of Commons Scrutiny Unit to help implement the 2017-19 Liaison Committee’s report recommendations on the use of research evidence in Parliament. The main aim of these recommendations is to diversify the research and evidence base used by select committees, leading to more diverse witness base and more effective scrutiny of government policies.
Prior to taking up the position at CLOSER in 2016, Rob worked in and around government and parliament, including the Ministry of Agriculture, House of Lords, and Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman.
