Although Peter had denied Jesus three times, just as Jesus had predicted (Matt. 26:34), his story did not end there. After the Resurrection, Jesus approached Peter with a question: “Do you love Me more than these?” Peter replied, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” Jesus responded, “Tend My lambs.”
Jesus asked Peter a second time, “Do you love Me?” Peter again replied, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” Jesus said, “Shepherd My sheep.” Then, for a third time, Jesus asked, “Do you love Me?” This time, Peter was grieved because Jesus asked the question yet again. Peter replied, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said, “Tend My sheep” (John 21:15–17, NASB 1995).
Just as Peter had denied Jesus three times, Jesus restored him three times through this crucial question: “Do you love Me?”
Though our circumstances may differ from Peter’s, the principle remains the same. The ultimate question God asks each of us in our own time and place is this: Do you love Me?
Everything hinges on how we answer that question.
