Ardhanari is the synthesis of Shiva and Parvati into one androgynous form. Shiva is the right side with Parvati is the left side. Shiva is often referred to as being the ideal husband and in this form he is literally sharing his body with his wife. Ardhanari has 10 arms. On the right side, the Shiva side, Ardhanari carries a discus, trident, knife and a cobra with his right hand being lifted in the abhaya mudra. On the left side representing Parvati, Ardhanari holds an axe, sword, lotus, conch shell with her last hand in the varada mudra or boon granting hand position. There is a cobra perched on his right shoulder. There is also a beautiful flaming arch surrounding Ardhanari's head that is not a typical arch for a Shiva statue. A stunning and unique example of Shiva as Ardhanari!
