Dancing Forth – the Scottish Show 2009 was the 55th consecutive show produced by RSCDS Edinburgh at Festival time.
Part 2 continues the celebrations for the 350th anniversary of the birth for our National Bard, Robert Burns.
Bog of Locan is a strathspey from the Gow’s fiddle played so well by our band. We stay with the magic of whisky and Burns for our next selection of dances starting with Niel Gow’s Farewell to Whisky a reel from RSCDS book 34, then into two dances by John Drewry The Magic art O’Gow a strathspey then Duncan Gray, a reel. Burns wrote two versions of Duncan Gray, both very different.
Our band gives us a Gow Medley – just sit back and let the music drift over you. Darren tells us the tale of The Bonnie Lass o’Ballochmyle, a favourite from the pen of Burns, but not to be out done Fiona comes to flirt with all the men in the audience singing that beautiful song by J Hook He’s aye a Kissin me. Now while the gentlemen all get back to their seats again Jon, Calum and Reuben play a Medley of tunes by our other maestro of the fiddle William Marshall. There is a wonderful painting of Marshall here in Edinburgh in the National Portrait Gallery in Queen Street.
As the first half of the show draws to a close we chose three dances all with an Edinburgh theme, the jig Corstorphine Fair by Margaret Hunter who used to teach branch classes here in Edinburgh, Edina’s Pride a strathspey written by Alex Gray yet another Edinburgh Branch teacher and finally, the reel The Gates of Edinburgh -remember the gates of this city of ours are always open, so you are always welcome here.
