Emergency at Tungabhadra Dam: Gate Collapse Sparks Flood Fears!
A crest gate of the Tungabhadra dam near Hospete, in Vijaynagar district in Karnataka was washed away on Saturday night due to the snapping of the chain link raising fears of floods downstream. This has raised concerns about potential flooding downstream. As a result, a flood alert has been issued for areas near the Pampa Sagar dam and along the Tungabhadra River, especially in Koppal.
To address the situation, the water resource department is working to repair the damaged gate. They need to lower the reservoir’s capacity from 105 TMC to 55 TMC for the repairs. Most gates have been opened, and 89,000 cusecs of water are being released. People have been warned not to venture near the river due to the heavy outflow of water from the dam.
Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister, DK Shivakumar, said that contractors are already working on repairs. The government is focused on managing the water shares for Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana while ensuring repairs are done. The repairs may take over a week and will involve replacing the damaged gate with a new one from Hyderabad.
Currently, 100,000 cusecs of water are being released daily, with an inflow of 25,000 cusecs. This has reduced the dam's storage from 105.78 TMC to 97.75 TMC. The board had warned of a possible release of 150,000 cusecs starting from Monday.
As per reports, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will visit the Tungabhadra Reservoir to assess the damage caused by a recent surge in water levels on Tuesday.
Also, in response to this situation, a delegation of BJP leaders, including state president B.Y. Vijayendra, opposition leader R. Ashok, and former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, is scheduled to visit the Tungabhadra Dam for inspection.
