Breaking News: India Votes - High Turnout Marks Phase 2 of Lok Sabha Elections 2024
The second phase of the Lok Sabha elections in 2024 witnessed brisk voting across 88 constituencies spanning 13 states in India. This phase saw a notable voter turnout of over 63%, indicating active participation in the democratic process.
A total of 1,202 candidates, comprising 1,098 male, 102 female, and two transgender contestants, contested for seats in the Lok Sabha, which serves as the lower house of the Indian parliament. This diverse pool of candidates reflects the inclusive nature of India's electoral system.
Despite the overall enthusiasm for voting, some incidents drew attention. In Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura, Rajasthan’s Banswara, and Maharashtra’s Parbhani, voters from four villages decided to boycott the polls. This action underscores the complexities and challenges that can arise during elections.
On a positive note, Bru voters from Tripura participated in the electoral process for the first time, marking a significant milestone in their political representation.
The geographical spread of polling was extensive, covering states like Kerala (all 20 seats), Karnataka (14 out of 28 seats), Rajasthan (13 seats), Maharashtra (eight seats), Uttar Pradesh (eight seats), Madhya Pradesh (six seats), Assam (five seats), Bihar (five seats), Chhattisgarh (three seats), West Bengal (three seats), Manipur (one seat), Tripura (one seat), and Jammu and Kashmir (one seat).
However, due to unforeseen circumstances such as the unfortunate demise of Bahujan Samaj Party candidate Ashok Balawi, polling in Madhya Pradesh’s Betul was rescheduled to the third phase on May 7, 2024. Such adjustments are necessary to ensure fairness and respect for all candidates.
The second phase also saw prominent personalities from various political parties contesting, including Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Shashi Tharoor, BJP's Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar, and actors-turned-politicians Hema Malini and Arun Govil. Their participation adds vibrancy and diversity to the electoral landscape.
In the midst of the electoral fervor, certain controversies emerged. Former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy raised concerns about transparency in the Bengaluru Rural constituency, alleging irregularities in the distribution of gift coupons with QR codes by a Congress candidate. Such allegations highlight the need for vigilance and adherence to electoral ethics.
Moreover, the Election Commission issued notices to BJP chief J.P. Nadda regarding alleged poll code violations during PM Modi's election rally speech. Similar notices were also sent to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge in response to complaints against Rahul Gandhi. These actions reflect the Election Commission's commitment to maintaining electoral integrity and fairness.
In response to the ongoing exchanges, Mr. Kharge extended an olive branch to PM Modi, offering to personally explain the Congress manifesto amidst claims of misinformation. This gesture signifies the importance of constructive dialogue and mutual understanding in the political arena.
As the electoral process unfolds, it is essential to uphold democratic values, promote inclusivity, and ensure transparency to uphold the integrity of India's democratic institutions. Each phase of the Lok Sabha elections brings forth unique challenges and opportunities, shaping the future trajectory of the nation.
