Surgical Treatment for complex SCI scenarios
Dr. Bellabarba, Professor of Orthopaedic and Neurological Surgery at the University of Washington describes the Harborview Medical Center experience of severe spinal injuries around the junction of the skull base to the upper cervical spine. The world leading Harborview Medical Center experience in treating these injuries has lead to improvements in injury recognition strategies and allows for improved neurologic recovery in all but the most severely spinal cord injury patients. describes the Harborview Medical Center experience of severe spinal injuries around the junction of the skull base to the upper cervical spine. On the other end of the spinal column the junction of the lumbar spine and the pelvis may be injured as a result of high-speed trauma or due to incipient stress fractures in patients with compromised bone stock. These injuries have historically been often missed or posed irresolvable challenges in terms of treatment. Dr. Rick Bransford, M.D. demonstrates improved outcomes by using a systematic assessment algorithm and then following a rational treatment pathway of either nonoperative care or surgical reconstruction. Final outcomes are strongly influenced by presence of non-disrupted sacral nerves and ability of the surgeon to realign and stabilize the injured bone elements. Dr. Bransford, Associate Professor of Orthopaedic and Neurological Surgery at the University of Washington illustrates the systematic team care approach that the Spine and Trauma Faculty at Harborview Medical Center have developed in managing these complex injuries and which has made them world experts in this type of trauma.
