In this video, we explain how to restore your gun rights after a criminal conviction in California.
A conviction for any felony, under California law, results in a lifetime prohibition on using, owning or possessing a firearm. Also, certain misdemeanor convictions -- including those for assault, battery, criminal threats, brandishing or domestic violence -- trigger a 10-year restriction on gun rights.
However, the law also allows for certain processes to restore gun rights, even after suffering a conviction for one of these crimes. The relief may come by way of a Penal Code 17b motion to reduce a felony to a misdemeanor. It can also come by way of a certificate of rehabilitation or a governor's pardon.
