In this video we will compare the maximum speeds of the three primary heavy bombers in Europe. The Avro Lancaster, Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, and the Consolidated B-24 Liberator.
The Lancaster was the newest design with by far the largest engines. Plus they were liquid cooled V-12s, much more streamlined than the U.S. air cooled radials. Then again, the US planes had turbochargers. Let's run the numbers from primary source material and compare.

Note: I mis-spoke on the engine sizes. The Lancaster's Merlins have the least displacement, but are liquid cooled and are the heaviest of the bunch.
