(6 May 2015) Law enforcement officials from 17 countries across the world gathered in Budapest for a unique shooting competition, the first ever World Police Service Pistol Shooting Championship.
In the two-day event which ended on Wednesday, police officers competed with each other, displaying their handgun skills in near real-life situations.
The competition was held at a suburban shooting range, which also serves as a training range for Hungarian police.
The participating countries - Lebanon, Bahrain, Kuwait, Hungary, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Panama, Colombia, China, Spain, Romania, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the Palestinian Territories - were represented by four-member teams.
Contestants competed in 12 different shooting events and had to respond to situations similar to those they could themselves encounter in their everyday duties, using legal and professional measures.
Situations were varied, from shooting targets in a parking lot to saving injured comrades and in every situation officers were competing against each other as well as fighting against the clock.
The competition rules demanded that national police uniforms and previously agreed equipment be worn.
Handguns were either issued by a competitor's police force or were requested from the Hungarian police.
Organisers said the event provided a unique opportunity for professional police personnel who daily prove their outstanding abilities and commitment to their profession in their duties.
The competition was organised by the Hungarian Law Enforcement Sports Association, at the request of the Union Sportive Internationale des Polices (USIP) (International Police Sports Union).
