Garuda Indonesia Flight 421, a Boeing 737 was a domestic flight in Indonesia between Ampenan and Yogyakarta with 60 people on board on January 16, 2002.
The Crash:
The aircraft was on approach to its final destination, when the pilots were told that there was a thunderstorm ahead of them. Minutes later, the encountered the storm and started to fly through heavy rain and hail. About 1 minute and a half after flying into the thunderstorm, both engines on the plane failed and the jet became a glider. All electrical power was also out. Even though the pilots tried to restart the engine, it was unsuccessful. As the airplane descended below 8,000 feet, they left the storm and saw the Bengawan Solo river ahead of them. The pilots decided to ditch into the river which was successful. Everyone on the plane survived with the exception of one flight attendant. The plane was written off.
