In this video you can hear my rendition of Maurice Duruflé's “Fugue sur le nom d'Alain” played on my Hauptwerk organ. I have chosen to use the sample set of Caen - St. Etienne, created by Sonus Paradisi.
I really mean that this is the very best romantic fugue written for the organ. It has it all. A beautiful theme, a well-made counterpoint and Duruflé uses a lot of other advances techniques.
It is a double fugue with 2 fugue subjects are expounded separately in compound time: the first is written in quavers. The second in semiquavers.
Durufle made is Prelude et Fugue sur le nom d'Alain in 1942 as a tribute to Duruflé’s friend and colleague, Jehan Alain. Also the brother of the distinguished organist Marie-Claire Alain.
