This is a great device for bringing in high quality XLR microphones as well as musical instruments into a computer or tablet. It can output up to 96khz or about double the quality of a CD.
There are two inputs on this device which can take a balanced audio via XLR or a 1/4" adapter from a guitar or other unbalanced audio device. Additionally it has MIDI inputs for digital instruments like keyboards and drum pads. It's pretty much a plug-and-play experience with no drivers required on the Mac or iOS platforms, and a small set of drivers on Windows. Garageband on the Mac and iPad was able to take advantage of all of its features without any effort.
Channels can be recorded independently provided your software supports that. It's also possible to do some simple mixing by adjusting the audio gain for each channel on the front of the device. There is a real time monitoring feature as well and you're able to also listen to what the computer is receiving from the device.
Connecting to an iPad will require the over-priced lightning to USB camera adapter from Apple. You will also need to bring in additional power to the Tascam as it won't get enough from the tablet. Tascam sells an AC adapter separately but I was able to get it working by running it through a powered USB hub.
The device is well constructed and rugged. And because it does all of its audio processing internally it will far exceed the existing audio inputs on your computer or tablet. It's perfect for podcasters and independent musicians.
