Rain and snow are set to cause chaos in Scotland, the Met Office has warned. Yellow warnings have been put in place today and tomorrow. From 6pm, forecasters predict heavy rainfall in North Argyll and parts of western Scotland, with heavy rain and melting snow likely to cause flooding. The warning remains in place tomorrow, while eastern Scotland is likely to experience snow, the Met Office says. People in areas with frost and ice were warned of injuries from slips and falls on hazardous surfaces, dangerous driving conditions and delays to public transport. Ice conditions have led to warnings for drivers to take care in the wintry weather. Ben Aldous, of the RAC, said: "Fog, ice and in some places snow are the enemies of drivers. "In order to avoid falling foul of the conditions it's important for motorists to adjust their driving style to suit the conditions. "Being gentler on the throttle and brakes, and slowing down particularly on rural or ungritted routes can help ensure a safe and trouble-free journey." He also urged drivers to check their tyres have plenty of tread and are properly inflated and that windscreens are "completely cleared of ice and snow". Sunday's freeze follows some of the coldest temperatures of the winter so far on Friday, going into Saturday morning. Overnight temperatures at Redesdale Camp in Northumberland plunged to minus 11.1C, while Northern Ireland also recorded its coldest night, with a temperature of minus 10.2C in Katesbridge, Co Down. The bone-chilling weather is set to improve though as January continues, according to the latest Met Office forecast. Temperatures are set to get marginally warmer next week, with highs of 10C by Wednesday. MET OFFICE OUTLOOK Today: Freezing fog and low cloud may be slow to clear from southern areas, elsewhere variable cloud and some sunshine in central and southern areas. Cloudier further north with some rain, mainly in the north-west, with snow showers for Shetland. Tonight: Some frost and fog in south, but less than recent nights, elsewhere rather cloudy with scattered showers in west and more persistent rain in the north-west. Frost in far north. Monday: Rain, some heavy, moving south, turning to snow across some northern and later central parts of Scotland. Wintry showers in the far north. Milder in south. Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday: Dry for many on Tuesday before rain spreads across all parts Wednesday, perhaps briefly some snow on northern hills. Becoming mainly dry on Thursday. Milder.
