An animated summary of the work of medical pioneers Andreas Vesalius, Ambroise Paré and William Harvey. This film explores each pioneer’s individual work and experimentation which lead to greater understanding of the human body. Using rich archive; authentic illustrations and original diagrams, this film brings to life the work of these three Renaissance pioneers. By contextualising Vesalius, Paré and Harvey with the then widely accepted teachings of Galen we see the evolution of ideas on anatomy and physiology and highlight how change occurred in medical thought.
This clip is from the BBC series Medicine Through Time; a series of animated films looking at the development of medicine and some of the significant individuals.

Teaching History?
This could be used to encourage pupils to discuss how chance played a role in Paré’s discovery for new treatments on the battlefield. They could discuss why this period and these pioneers marked a real development in understanding and investigation.
This clip will be relevant for teaching KS4 History in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and National 4 and 5 History in Scotland.
