In between filming this video and posting it up, BMW have made some changes to the iX xDrive50. Most importantly, at RM465,800 as of March 2024, it's about RM62k cheaper than the unit we tested here.

Besides the sharper pricing, the good news is that you also get upgraded to 22kWh AC charging and air suspension as standard.

However, they've also taken some features out of the spec sheet, such as the panoramic glass roof, some of the crystal and wood cabin trim, and the fancy Laserlight headlights.

We've low key been avoiding the iX, at least first, but not long after seeing quite a few of them on Malaysian roads, we couldn't help but be super curious about it. Spoiler: BMW knew what they were doing.

That grille (which isn't a grille) made an outsized impression when the iX was first revealed. It signalled a changing tide at BMW. That they would stop at nothing to not be derivative, especially so with EVs where so many brands are starting to look like clones of each other, sharing a similarly shape and broad visual cues.

The iX is BMW's first 'from-the-ground-up' EV and they've made some brave calls with it. After some time in the xDrive50 - the one to get in our opinion - it seems their risk has paid off. It uses the occasion and unique proposition that is an EV to let itself rewrite some of the rules of car design and function, as close as it could get to a clean slate.

The iX xDrive50 uses dual electric motors that feed off of a pretty massive 111.5kWh battery, producing a maximum output of 523PS and 765Nm of torque for a 0-100km/h sprint of 4.6 seconds, though more conservative driving is tested to yield some 630km on a full charge (WLTP cycle).

So far, it's proven to be a big hit for BMW, even here in Malaysia where it has maintained a firm grip on the premium electric SUV throne.
