If I were to explain sidechaining to a 5 year old, I would probably explain it something like this...

If my fist was a kick drum and a pillow was the bass. Sidechaining would be like my fist (the kick) punching a hole in the pillow (bass) repeatedly. (If i was explaining this to a 5 year old, I would obviously follow that up with a wild pillow fight for the ages.)

Sidechaining is essentially one track punching a hole in another track to make room for the former. And in doing so, you add a fresh sense of rhythm, tightness, and pulse to your song.
